MULTI CULTURAL READ-A-LONG
We would like to send a special “Thanks” to Ace Hardware Corporation
in Oak Brook and Bill Sullivan and his team for reaching out to us and
visiting Giant Steps to read to our students. They read stories about
several holiday traditions during our Multicultural Read-A-Long.
The students enjoyed learning about the different traditions as well as
interacting with the Oak Brook staff.

S.T.E.A.M. CHALLENGE
S.T.E.A.M. represents Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Giant
Steps has their very own S.T.E.A.M. Lab on site!
The S.T.E.A.M. Lab was incorporated into the
curriculum in the Fall of 2017 and was funded by
a $20,000 grant from DuPage Foundation as well
as a $10,000 grant from the Colonel Stanley R.
McNeil Foundation. Students visit the S.T.E.A.M.
Lab for a minimum of two S.T.E.A.M. lessons
per week. This allows them to be engaged in
experiential learning, which results in higher
retention rates of the materials they cover during
their lessons! Teaming up to lead The STEAM
Lab are Giant Steps’ Curriculum, Instruction and
Assessment Supervisor, Sherry Bochenek and
S.T.E.A.M. Specialist, Tia Purnell. Our goal is to
add to this team a Certified S.T.E.A.M. Teacher.
