6,758: This number may seem random; high even. However, this is the number of steps the average person takes during a 5K walk. Giant Steps is challenging all of Chicagoland to take these steps to raise awareness for autism during the Annual 5K Walk for Autism at Rich Harvest Farms on October 7th. The family-focused event will also provide food and drinks, as well as games, raffles and activities for children.
Located in scenic Sugar Grove, Illinois, Giant Steps Annual 5K Walk for Autism, now in its 11th year, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars which have been used to support the school's mission of providing superior education and support to those impacted by autism and their families.
"We serve students across nine counties in northeast Illinois, encompassing over 60 school districts," said Giant Steps Executive Director Sylvia Smith.
"Due to the extensive level of support we provide our students, we typically face a disparity in our federal funding and required operating cost of approximately $6,600 per student," Smith said. "The Annual 5K Walk for Autism is a major fundraiser for Giant Steps Day School and Canopy Adult Services, which helps us provide our students with resources such as licenses for special educational software, sensory equipment, and community outings and life skills training, to name a few."
There is no cost to participate in the Annual 5K Walk for Autism and there are many ways to show your support, in addition to walking.
"If walking a 5K seems daunting, we also have a shorter, 1-mile-long path available," said Lisa Ewers, Giant Steps director of development. "Additionally, if you prefer to not walk, we will have raffles and all sorts of fun activities, so you can just show up and have a great time for a great cause."
"If you would like to take giant steps with us and show support, you have several options available. You can sponsor a walker, a team or make a general donation to Giant Steps by visiting www.mygiantsteps.org/walk2017," Ewers added.
